The proposed design for the Senate Auditorium at the University of Sri Jayawardenapura is carefully crafted to elevate the majestic quality of one of Sri Lanka's most prestigious educational institutions. With a deep respect for the university’s distinguished reputation, the design aims to create a space that not only reflects its academic excellence but also inspires a sense of awe and reverence.
The entrance to the auditorium is uniquely designed to ensure that visitors do not immediately see the space upon arrival. Instead, they are guided along an arrayed pathway, subtly framed by a striking timber screen. This intentional design choice serves to gradually reveal the grandeur of the auditorium, creating a sense of anticipation as visitors move toward the main entrance.
Inside, the auditorium's layout follows a radial arrangement, allowing for a seamless and undisturbed interaction among all occupants. This design is central to the space, fostering a sense of unity and engagement throughout. The radial configuration ensures that every individual, regardless of their position in the auditorium, feels connected to the proceedings.
A key feature of the design is the suspended, decorative radial ceiling, which not only enhances the aesthetic of the space but also complements the floor plan. The ceiling’s design projects ceremoniously toward the end of the main podium, drawing the eye upward and adding a sense of grandeur to the room.
Lighting and furniture arrangement were carefully considered to further enhance the spatial quality of the auditorium. The entire floor of the auditorium is built on a luxurious timber deck, providing warmth and richness to the space. Pathways leading through the auditorium are lined with deep red carpeting, further contributing to the majestic and ceremonial atmosphere of the room.
