Thalawathugoda

This personalized residence is located at Thalawathugoda, Sri Lanka is on a fifteen perch land which is in walking distance to the Madiwela -Thalawathugoda Road. 

The residence is located on picturesque plot of land facing the jogging track and beyond that the canal and the lush green paddy field, facing west the location promises a beautiful scenery of setting sun throughout the year.

The clients are, a husband, wife and their three grown up children. The gentleman is a Vascular surgeon by profession and the lady is also a doctor. This abode is their retirement home and their sanctuary and also the entertainment space for their family and friends. 

The client is an antique car collector, and the ground floor is used to park his cars and to use as his workshop. The rest of the ground floor is for the servant’s quarters and laundry. 

The couple preferred their living quarters on the first floor, and it is comprised with master bed room, master bath and master closet. Master sitting area is a convertible space, which could be turn in to a bed room for guests and there is a common bath to accommodate it. The living is facing the paddy fields and full height windows are giving all the vistas in to the main spaces of the design. Special feature in this house is the garbage and linen chutes. These are located in the pantry area where the homeowners can dispose of laundry and garbage directly into the collection points. Vertical accessibility is provided via a staircase and with a passenger lift for ease in day today lives. Separate service staircase is connected from ground floor into the first-floor kitchen and house help can be access through that without disturbing to the users of the house.

The boundary wall in the rear side, facing the jogging track has a fascinating concept which was done with different sizes of Hume pipes. Giving the house a more rustic look and feel to go with its character it is usage of natural materials at its best. The specialty of the house is most of the finishes are more rustic, and natural. This was achieved by using a palette of natural and raw materials such as concrete, natural stones, wood, steel, textured cement finishes, exposed fairfaced slab finishes and more. The modern, tropical themed furniture and built-in furniture are associated with the interior to enhance the simplicity of the design.
